Podlech & Zarre (2013), vol. I, p. 717Plants 8−25 cm tall, acaulescent, hairy with thin, often bent or flexuose white hairs 1−2 mm. Rootstock up to 6 mm thick, strongly divided, with short to elongated branches densely covered with remnants of old stipules. Stipules thick-membranous, distinctly longitudinally nerved, 10−15 mm, adnate to the petiole for 3−5 mm, ciliate at the margins or more rarely hairy on outer side, the lower ones oblong, the upper ones longer, narrowly triangular-acuminate. Leaves 6−15(−28) cm; petiole 1.5−4 cm, like the rachis densely or toward the top loosely covered with short, nearly spreading hairs, sometimes hardened and persistent to the next vegetation period (in subsp. khorassanicus). Leaflets in 15−36(−40) pairs, very variable (often in one plant), oblong-elliptic to narrowly ovate, sometimes ovate to nearly orbicular, 3−13(−15) × (1−)2−5(−6.5) mm, subacute to subobtuse or more rarely slightly retuse, on upper side densely covered with long, flexuose-tangled, wool-like hairs, on underside loosely to densely subappressed hairy. Racemes subsessile or with a peduncle 1−2(−6) cm, with spreading hairs, (1−)2−4-flowered. Bracts whitish-membranous, filiform, 4−8 mm, hairy. Pedicels 3−4(−5) mm, hairy. Calyx 8−20 mm, tubular, pale yellowish green to straw-colored, more rarely reddish-suffused, loosely to densely covered with spreading hairs; teeth filiform, mostly darker green, 5−11 mm. Petals glabrous, whitish or yellow, sometimes with greenish stripes, often fading to green yellow. Standard 13−25 mm; blade 7−12 mm wide, obovate-panduriform. emarginate, distinctly constricted in the lower half, at the base angular-dilated, subabruptly contracted into the short claw. Wings 11−22 mm; blades narrowly oblong, slightly to distinctly dilated upward, obliquely emarginate, 9−12 × 3−4(−5) mm; auricle 1−2 mm, claw 5−9 mm. Keel (8−)10−17 mm; blades obliquely oblong, with slightly to gibbously curved lower edge and nearly straight upper edge or triangular-elliptic, with rectangularly curved lower edge, obtuse, 5−10 × 2.5−4 mm; auricle short, claw 6−10 mm. Stamen-tube nearly truncate at the mouth. Ovary sessile or with a stipe (2−)3−5.5 mm, densely appressed hairy; style hairy in lower half, below the stigma minutely papillose-hairy. Legumes sessile or with a stipe up to 5.5 mm, oblong to ellipsoid, (8−)10−14 mm long, 5−7(−9) mm high and 4−5 mm wide, keeled ventrally, slightly keeled by the prominent midvein dorsally, rounded and abruptly contracted into the oblique or rarely straight beak 1−4 mm, unilocular; valves thin but tough, straw-colored, with thin white hairs; fruit opening at the ventral suture and along the dorsal side. Seeds 3−3.5 × 2−2.5 mm, olive brown with scattered darker dots, rugulose-pitted. The species can be divided into three subspecies: 1 Rachises normally hardened and surviving, often pungent; flowers small; calyx 8−10 mm; standard (11−)13−16 mm; blades of keel nearly triangular; ovary and legumes sessile or rarely with a stipe up to 2 mm ........................................................ subsp. khorasanicus Podlech − Rachises not hardened, marcescent; flowers larger; calyx 10−18 mm; standard 15−25 mm; blades of keel nearly straight to slightly elliptic-triangular; ovary and legumes distinctly stipitate, with a stipe (2−)3−5.5 mm ........................................................................................... 2 2 Leaflets in (16−)20−23 pairs; petals mostly yellow or fading green yellow, more rarely whitish or whitish with green stripes; standard 15−21(−25) mm ........................... subsp. citrinus − Leaflets in (22−)26−36(−40) pairs; petals mostly white or white with green stripes, more rarely pale yellow; standard (16−)18−25 mm ...... subsp. barrowianus (Aitch. & Baker) Podlech
