Rootstock strong, up to 20 mm in diameter, branched, with short to elongated partly subterranean stolons up to 20 cm, in upper part densely covered with rigid remnants of old leaves. Stems of the current year very short. Stipules white-membranous, 6−10 mm, adnate to the petiole for 2−3 mm, glabrous, the lower ones narrowly ovate-obtuse, the upper ones narrowly triangular-acuminate. Leaves (3−)5−10(−25) cm; petiole very short, rarely up to 2 cm, like the rachis sparsely to loosely hairy, rigid, lignified with age, often pungent and persistent mostly for several years. Leaflets in 12−19(−25) pairs, terminal leaflet often soon stunted, all oblong, 2−5 × 1−2 mm, rounded, on upper side glabrous or with scattered appressed hairs toward the margins, on underside sparsely appressed hairy. Racemes sessile to subsessile, loosely 1−3-flowered. Bracts white- membranous, 4−8 mm, narrowly triangular, glabrous or sparsely ciliate. Pedicels 2−4 mm, glabrous. Standard 15−18 mm; blade 5−7 mm wide, elliptic to obovate, emarginate, subangular passing into the wide claw.
