Stems up to 45 cm and 8 mm thick, parts of the current year 20–30(–42) cm, more rarely shorter, densely hairy, internodes 5–25 mm. Stipules yellowish white, membranous, one-nerved, 5–12 mm, adnate to the petiole for 1.5–2 mm, free tips from triangular base subulate, hairy and ciliate at the margins, glabrescent with age. Leaves (2–) 3–6 cm, obliquely erect to spreading; petiole 0.5–1.5 cm, like the rachis stout, pungent, hairy but glabrous with age; terminal spine 2–3 times longer than the uppermost leaflets.
